STEP 1

Enter your measurements

Choose your unit: dimensional fields support inches, millimeters, feet, yards, centimeters and meters with automatic conversion.

Estimated loose fill required—m³

Planning estimate: verify site dimensions, product specifications, local requirements and professional drawings before ordering or construction.

Complete planning guide

How to use the Backfill Volume Calculator

Enter the excavated volume and subtract foundations or other permanent work occupying that space. Multiply the remaining compacted fill volume by the loose-to-compacted factor specified for the selected material and site. The example factor is an assumption, not a universal soil property. The result estimates delivery volume before compaction.

Material sizes & reference dimensions

Use these as common planning references only. Actual product sizes, structural dimensions and effective coverage can vary by manufacturer, region, design and specification.

ReferenceCommon size / rangePlanning note
Excavation30 m³ in the exampleUse measured or drawing-based volume.
Occupied volume10 m³ in the exampleExclude spaces that require fill.
Volume factor1.2 assumedLoose volume needed per unit compacted volume.

Cost guide

Multiply the result by your current supplier rate per m³. Check packaging and include delivery, installation and accessories separately. The calculator does not include prices or assume a current market rate.

Simple budgeting method

Calculated quantity × current unit rate + labour + transport + taxes + accessories + waste/contingency = preliminary project budget.

Practical accuracy tips

  • Obtain the factor for the actual fill material.
  • Do not include unsuitable excavated material as reusable fill.
  • The calculation does not determine placement layers or compaction requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What does the volume factor mean?

A factor of 1.2 means 1.2 m³ of loose material is assumed to provide 1 m³ of compacted fill.

Does it check soil suitability?

No. Soil selection and compaction requirements need project-specific assessment.
